porn industry , economic indicator

For an industry that’s asking for a $5 billion bailout, porn is getting a surprising amount of “coverage” these days – especially in “conservative states.”

According to a recent study published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, porn is making a killing all across America’s geographic spectrum, although it appears there are more subscribers in “goody-two-shoes” states.
From The New Scientist:

Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.
Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year’s presidential election รข€“ Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama …

Residents of 27 states that passed laws banning gay marriages boasted 11% more porn subscribers than states that don’t explicitly restrict gay marriage.
The study was conducted by a Harvard professor examining the anonymous credit card zip codes of thousands of porn customers over a period of two years.
America’s most porn-hungry state? Utah … by a landslide.
In case you were wondering how much money we’re talking about, Internet porn is a $2.8 billion a year business, second only to the $3.6 billion a year adult video business.
